Using Social Media To Provide Lactation Support Following the Mexico Earthquake A Case Study in Support During Emergencies

This Tuesday, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake left more than 250 dead and countless families displaced in central Mexico. With many families seeking support in shelters, Asociacion de Consultores Certificados en Lactancia Materna de Mexico (ACCLAM) developed a rapid response designed to bring lactation support to families in need.

In Mexico, the WhatsApp messaging application is widely used by smartphone users to communicate with family, friends, co-workers, and health care providers. ACCLAM developed an infographic on how to receive free WhatsApp support from a group of volunteers and disseminated it widely in the area.

The volunteers are all IBCLC members of ACCLAM, an emerging non-profit that is leveraging a small group of volunteers into significant results for the country. (Learn more about ACCLAM here.)

ACCLAM members have shared the infographic using Facebook. The WhatsApp lactation support is free to any earthquake impacted family in Mexico.

“Although our IBCLC members are scattered throughout the country, our immediate goal to provide timely support and information to Mexico’s breastfeeding families can be achieved through our social media channels,” said Roberta Graham de Escobedo, President of ACCLAM.

ACCLAM’s efforts in Mexico are just one example of mobilizing efforts to support families during emergencies.
